The Guatemalan Femicide Conference: Shed the Veil of Indifference

On March 21st, 2007, MuJER and Loyola Marymount University hosted an international conference on Guatemala's Femicide. Femicide is the systematic and violent murder of women. According to Amnesty International, the number of women violently murdered in Guatemala between 2001 and 2006 surpassed 2,800. These murders occur with impunity; there is generally no investigation and no one is charged.

The two-day conference kicked off with a demonstration in front of the Guatemalan Consulate in Los Angeles. The purpose of the conference was to create a safe space to discuss and debate femicide (in general) and Guatemala's femicide in particular. Conference presenters discussed the current theories about the causes of femicide, the culture of violence behind the systematic murder of women, the laws that perpetuate the culture of violence, and the actions that we as concerned human beings can undertake to eradicate femicide. The conference sought to place international pressure on Guatemala to force its government to address the increasing number of women murdered in Guatemala.
